In case you didn’t know February 23rd was National Love Your Pet Day. I acknowledge and embrace it since pretty much any love-related celebration other than Valentine’s Day tends to get drowned out in February. I also happen to be of the mind that every day is Love Your Pet day.
It also gives me a great reason to show some of the most authentic examples of the human-animal bond that I ever see–and that’s coming from a guy who sees a lot of it. I’m talking about the scenes at each and every VET SOS (Veterinary Street Outreach) clinic I’ve attended and photographed for the last 8 years. These are free clinics held for homeless San Franciscans and their pets where they can receive veterinary exams and services. Even after almost a decade of shooting this I continue be amazed with the profound examples of the deep love possible between pets and their people and the selfless and remarkable work the VET SOS volunteers bring to each clinic. These shots are from the two most recent clinics I visited at the end of last year down in the Bay View and Civic Center. To see more from over the years you can check out my VETSOS project gallery
