Photographing dogs and cats together is a bit of a holy grail for a pet photographer. In my experience even when a pet guardian says their dog and cat get along it generally means they tolerate each other and will sit together if forced OR when they do cuddle up it’s not on cue and tends to happen at a time and place that won’t look great in a photo (like at 2AM on an old blanket in the basement)
So when I get a chance to do a commercial or advertising project that requires puppies and kittens hanging out together I bring in the troops to make sure we have the right set of circumstances for ridiculously cute things to happen and look great. To get it all to work requires quite a team: trainers and animals, a gaffer with his magic lighting powers, a stylist/set decorator, an assistant and a producer to handle all the details.
I had one such job not long ago with Big Heart Pet Brands (now part of J. M Smucker) and thought it would be fun to give you a peek behind the curtain of one of these productions. Special thanks to Bow Wow Productions, Little Giant Lighting and Grip, Lisa Hammond (set decorator and stylist extraordinaire), Marc Anderson (our Gaffer), Emily (my intrepid assistant) and Jeanette Aguilar for producing the whole darn thing.
