I’m kind of a scrooge when it comes to Valentine’s Day. I’ve never really gone for the whole buy-chocolate-and-jewelry-and-go-out-to-eat thing. However, if there’s a chance to turn a commercial holiday on its ear and maybe use it to help out homeless dogs and cats and find them a permanent place in a loving home then I’m willing to make an exception.
If you’ve been considering bringing a pet into your life give yourself and them a gift this Valentine’s Day: bring a dog or cat home from a shelter or rescue group. It will save a life and make yours better. If you can’t or just aren’t ready (it is serious, lifelong commitment) that’s fine. But do consider making a donation to or volunteering at a shelter or one of the many animal welfare groups out there.
If you happen to be an animal lover and a V-day traditionalist, it’s still fine to give candy and jewelry, too — just be careful about leaving the chocolate out where your pets might find it. It’s not good for them.
Now for requisite adorable dog and cat photos to seal the deal. Several of the shots you’ll see are from a huge project I worked on last year with Big Heart Pet Brands that I’ll be highlighting in a future post. Spoiler alert: it involves puppies and kittens sleeping together.
