As a San Francisco Giants fan who also happens to be a pet photographer it’s been a pretty good year. A few months back I got to photograph starting pitcher Matt Cain with his dog and a couple of weeks ago I was asked by the folks at Tony LaRussa’s Animal Welfare Foundation (ARF) to shoot Giants shortstop, Brandon Crawford, in the Giants dugout at AT&T Park for the annual ARF celebrity calendar. All proceeds go to ARF so if you like seeing good-looking stars with pets every month this is definitely up your alley.
The day we shot, the Giants were playing the Pirates and we’d have about 15 minutes max with Brandon before practice started. My assistant, Emily, and I got there early and set everything up – I wasn’t sure what sort of light I’d be dealing with so I brought the biggest octabank I have and kept my fingers crossed it would fit (it did, barely).
Next, Elena Bicker from ARF showed up with the animal talent: Mia the Golden Retriever and Jax the black lab. The Pirates were taking batting practice at the time and at least 5 or 6 of came over to meet the dogs proving that even MLB players take a break for animals. Brandon arrived right on time and couldn’t have been nicer. It took less than 5 minutes to get the shots though I think Brandon really took a shine to both dogs since he seemed a bit reluctant to stop petting them.
Sure hope the trend holds – would love to work with the rest of the team before the post season hits! You can see the final shot below along with a couple of behind the scenes grabs.
