Fans of this blog and my work know that I use my dog, Bizzy, a lot in my photography. My cat, Jimmy Chew, gets photographed a fair amount, too, but when it comes to costumes and posing Biz definitely has the upper paw. He’s a real trooper and I’ve definitely made him do things and wear things that you’d never catch me doing myself. I owe him…bigtime.
For Easter this year I tried getting Jimmy to get into a basket dressed up with plastic eggs and fake grass but he was having none of it so the bunny job went once again to Biz.
I’m not sure if it’s because Bizzy is now officially middle-aged (he just turned 8) or because I crossed some sort of costume threshold with him on St Patrick’s day but this year he decided to protest and not make this easy for his ole pet photographer dad. You can see it in his eyes in the first shot below (yes, I am in serious trouble).
However, as hard as he tries to protest and balk Bizzy simply cannot be unphotogenic. Perhaps I’m biased and my judgement’s clouded when it comes to my animals but even when he’s 3/4 hidden from the camera Bizzy still manages to pull off a shot. I’ve worked with human models and actors as well as a good number of animals that are the same way. They just know how to turn it on (whatever IT is) when the shot’s being taken.
If any of you have animals that are the same way please let me know. I’m always looking for models with that ineffable star quality.
